Oct. 19-21, 2023 | Washington, D.C.

The Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Alliance is honored to be hosting the inaugural CURRENTS Convening, a 3-day national gathering of NHPI leaders from the continental U.S., Hawai’i, the U.S. Territories, and the Freely Associated States. As we emerge from the pandemic, NHPI leaders aim to strengthen relationships with federal agencies and each other to improve approaches to equitable access and inclusion of NHPIs and NHPI issues in national-level strategies for resource allocation, community engagement, and representation.

The inaugural CURRENTS Convening will take place at the Royal Sonesta Washington DC Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, October 19 through Saturday, October 21, 2023, immediately following the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum’s 2023 VOICES Conference.

CURRENTS Objectives

We are carrying forth the vision of the NHPI Alliance’s founding Executive Director, the late Kawen Toagamau Segaula Young, to achieve the following objectives:

Connect NHPI organizations to federal agencies and national organizations. The pandemic taught us the futility of waiting for resources to reach our shores. We will invite federal agencies and national organizations to our table to build the connections required for strong relationships that will become reciprocal in sharing resources, familiarity, and lasting care for our communities.

Engage, renew, and strengthen relationships among NHPI organizations. We came through the pandemic with key reminders about the strength of working together, gaps in our work that could use our collective care, and the need to nurture emerging leaders. Our continued commitment to the lives of our people depend on our collective capacity to uplift love, respect, reciprocity, humility, and dedication.

Align support for NHPI Equity Strategies in response to the federal government’s Equity Action Plans. Over 90 federal agencies have laid out Equity Action Plans with more than 300 strategies to address systemic inequities and barriers in national policies and programs “that hold too many underserved communities back from prosperity, dignity, and equality.”1 We will ensure that our voices and approaches are included as we build reciprocal, intentional, and meaningful relationships with federal agencies.
